(13th July 2017 – Macau) Organised by Chiu Yeng Culture Limited (“Chiu Yeng Culture”), co-organised by Chiii Design Ltd. (“Chiii Design”), the second Macau Art Graduates Joint Exhibition “Y Show” held its grand opening ceremony at Regency Art Hotel on 13th July, 2017. Esteemed guests from the community and exhibitors from both local and overseas universities and institutes were invited to witness the kick-off of the second “Y Show”, a great opportunity for the exhibitors to showcase their outstanding art works at the annual design event. Government officials and celebrities were invited to the Opening Ceremony, including Mr. Kou Ming, Deputy Director – General of Economic Affairs Departments, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao S.A.R.; Ms. Leong Lai, Director of Education and Youth Affairs Bureau; Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, Director of the Macao Government Tourism Office; Mr. Chan Peng Fai, Vice President of Cultural Affairs Bureau; Mr. Chang Kun Hong, Acting Director of Tertiary Education Services Office; Ms. Vanessa Wong, Secretary-General of Committee of Cultural Industries; Ms. Angela Leong On Kei, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; together with Mr. Mann Lao and Ms. Sabrina Ho Chiu Yeng, Founders of “Y Show”. Meanwhile, representatives of Macau and overseas exhibitors were also invited to the event, including Prof. Leung Shing On, Director of Centre for Continuing Education, University of Macau; Prof. Lei Cheng Cheong, Associate Professor of School of Arts, Macau Polytechnic Institute; Prof. Samantha Jiang, Assistant Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Arts, Macau University of Science and Technology; Prof. Carlos Sena Caires, Assistant Professor and Coordinator for the Department of Design of Faculty of Creative Industries, University of Saint Joseph; and Ms. Yan Xiaoyi, Lecturer of Department of Arts and Design, City University of Macau; and Prof. Eric Yim, Deputy Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Chairman of Design Council of Hong Kong.
The second “Y Show” will take place at Regency Art Hotel from 13th July to 16th July. The four-day exhibition continuously gained the active participation from five local universities and institutes: University of Macau, Macao Polytechnic Institute, Macau University of Science and Technology, University of Saint Joseph, and City University of Macau; and several overseas exhibitors: Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Design Council of Hong Kong, National Taiwan Normal University, China Academy of Art, Shantou University, Kuwasawa Design School, and Berlin University of the Arts. There are total 113 pieces of works showcased throughout the whole venue including 28 pieces of Product Design works, 13 pieces of Visual Arts works, 23 pieces of Spatial and Architecture Design works, 35 pieces of Visual Communication Design works, and 14 pieces of Digital Media Design works, bringing a fresh and new visual experience.
Another key event of the exhibition, the Enterprise Tour, invites international enterprises and designers to attend a tour led by professional designers, with the aim to deepen the understanding between enterprises and the younger creators, so as to directly provide a platform and job opportunity for the design graduates.
Each year “Y Show” presents a different visual theme; the theme this year reflects the students’ perspective by using “blood”, representing the students’ efforts. To encourage and support young artists on their efforts and enhance their confidence towards their future creation, the second “Y Show” continues to establish the Outstanding Award. An Assessment Committee will be formed by famous designers from the Asia regions to select the top ten outstanding art works in the exhibition, they include Mr. Konstantin Bessmertny, Russian artist; Mr. Chen Feibo, Founder of Bob Chen Interior Design Office from Hangzhou; Mr. Henry Chu, Founder and Creative Director of pill & pillow from Hong Kong; Mr. Fang Jianping and Mr. Ding Fan, co-founders of United Design Lab from Beijing; Mr. Jody Xiong, Founder of The Nine from Shanghai; Mr. Mann Lao and Ms. Sabrina Ho Chiu Yeng, Founders of “Y Show”.
In addition, entrepreneurs and well-known designers from Macau, Hong Kong and Mainland China were invited to the Opening Ceremony to share about the latest trends of the design industry at the “Y Forum”, including: Ms. Angela Leong On Kei, Member of the Legislative Assembly of Macau; Mr. James Chu, Chairman of Macau Designers Association; Mr. Clement Cheng, Chairman, Board of Council of Macau Interior Design Commercial Association; Prof. Eric Yim, Deputy Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Chairman of Design Council of Hong Kong; Mr. Ready Zhang, President of Guangzhou Design Week; Mr. Xu Lixian, Chairman of Shenzhen Graphic Design Association; Mr. Mann Lao and Ms. Sabrina Ho Chiu Yeng, Founders of “Y Show”.
“Y Class” Creative Design Courses, a brand new educational project of the second “Y Show” has officially begun on 11th July, inviting design specialists from Asia and Macau to be the class instructors, local instructors include Mr. Fortes, Pakeong Sequeira, Contemporary Artist; Mr. Siza Cham, Founder of TCDI; Mr. Nono, Leong Chi Hang, Founder of Chiii Design; and Mr. Casber U, Multimedia Artist. Overseas instructors include Mr. Konstantin Bessmertny, Mr. Chen Feibo, Mr. Henry Chu and Mr. Jody Xiong. The courses aim to enhance students’ critical thinking skills and knowledge on design through academic and practical teaching method as well as to promote the education of creative design and cultivate talents to enhance their overall design capabilities. Also “Y Class” aims to expedite the promotion of adequate economic diversification in developing the creative industry in Macau.
Ms. Sabrina Ho Chiu Yeng, Managing Director of Chiu Yeng Culture and Founder of “Y Show”, stated, “I hope to support the promotion of the cultural development by different means, also to enhance the motivation of Macau citizens for their life-long learning. I hope that aesthetics education can be popularised into primary education, so that teenagers may have more chances to get in contact with design and to cultivate their creative thinking.”
